Why Apple iOS devices don't support direct printing without a dialog

Technical Limitation of Apple iOS/iPadOS System

One of the most frequently asked questions by restaurant managers is:

"Why does our iPad always display the system print dialog and cannot connect directly to the Bluetooth printer?"

Why Does This Happen?

Apple restricts direct connection to Bluetooth devices from the Safari browser in iOS/iPadOS due to their internal system policies.

  • On the iPad, no web page is allowed to communicate directly with the Bluetooth chip without having a dedicated native app from the App Store.
  • Whenever printing from an Apple device, iOS necessarily opens the AirPrint window where the user must press the "Print" button.

Recommended Professional Solutions:

To have instant one-touch printing without any dialog:

  1. Use an Android Tablet for the Room: Android devices (Samsung Galaxy Tab, Lenovo Tab, etc.) support direct Bluetooth wireless connection to Google Chrome at high speed.
  2. Use Network Printers (LAN/Ethernet): If you absolutely want to use the iPad in the room, connect the printers with a LAN network cable. The system can send orders via the server without relying on the tablet's Bluetooth!
